How to Install LED Strip Lights Under Kitchen Cabinets

Step-by-step guide for installing under-cabinet LED strips. Covers wiring, mounting, and choosing the right color temperature for your kitchen.

How to Install LED Strip Lights Under Kitchen Cabinets

Under-cabinet LED strip lighting transforms kitchens by illuminating countertops and creating a modern, layered lighting design. Here's your complete installation guide.

What You'll Need

  • - LED strip lights (3000K recommended for kitchens)
  • - Aluminum channel with diffuser
  • - LED power supply (12V or 24V depending on strips)
  • - Wire connectors or soldering kit
  • - 3M VHB tape or mounting clips
  • - Dimmer switch (optional but recommended)

Step 1: Measure and Plan

Measure the underside of each cabinet where you want lighting. Map out where the power supply will be located and how you'll route the wiring. The power supply should be accessible but hidden — inside a cabinet or above the cabinets is ideal.

Step 2: Prepare the Surface

Clean the mounting surface with isopropyl alcohol. The adhesive on LED strips needs a clean, dry surface for maximum adhesion. For long-term reliability, use aluminum channels — they also act as heat sinks and provide a professional finish.

Step 3: Cut and Connect Strips

Cut LED strips only at the marked cutting points (usually every 3 LEDs). Use solderless connectors for easy assembly, or solder for a more permanent connection.

Step 4: Mount the Strips

Press the aluminum channels firmly into place. If using adhesive-backed strips directly, apply firm pressure for 30 seconds along the entire length. Position strips toward the front of the cabinet for maximum countertop illumination.

Step 5: Wire and Power

Connect strips to the power supply. If using a dimmer, install it between the power supply and the strips. Test everything before finalizing the installation.

Pro Tips

  • - Use warm white (3000K) for a cozy kitchen feel, or neutral (4000K) for task-oriented cooking areas.
  • - Always use a diffuser — it eliminates hotspots and creates a smooth, even light.
  • - Consider a motion sensor for convenience and energy savings.
